The right wood stain does more than change the appearance of an outdoor sauna. It also helps protect the external timber from moisture, sunlight and changing weather conditions.
At Polaris Sauna, we normally use Remmers Nutwood for our outdoor saunas. It creates a warm, natural brown finish that works particularly well with Thermowood and suits a wide range of gardens, patios and outdoor spaces.
However, Nutwood is not the only option. Customers can also choose another Remmers wood stain colour if they would prefer a finish that better matches their home, garden or personal style.
Our Standard Colour: Remmers Nutwood
Nutwood is our standard and most frequently used stain colour.
We choose it because it:
- complements the natural appearance of Thermowood
- creates a warm and balanced brown finish
- works well with black roof shingles and darker sauna details
- suits both modern and traditional gardens
- allows the natural wood grain to remain visible
Unless another colour has been agreed in advance, Nutwood is normally the colour we use when staining an outdoor sauna.
Other Remmers Wood Stain Colours
Customers are not limited to Nutwood. The Remmers colour boards show a range of lighter, darker and more reddish wood tones.
Available options include:
- Stone Pine / Larch
- Pine
- Rustic Oak
- Light Oak
- Teak
- Chestnut
- Mahogany
- Nutwood
- Palisander
- Ebony
The final appearance can vary depending on the timber, the natural grain, the lighting and the number of coats applied.
On the colour boards, the sample on the left shows the appearance after the first coat, while the sample on the right shows the deeper and more intense finish after the second coat.
One Coat Is Normally Applied at the Customer’s Property
We normally apply one coat of Remmers wood stain at the customer’s property.
This gives the sauna an initial protective finish and immediately improves the appearance of the external timber.
However, this first coat should not be considered the final stage of long-term timber maintenance. Outdoor timber continues to absorb stain and react to the surrounding weather conditions after installation.
When Should the Sauna Be Stained Again?
We recommend that the customer applies another coat within the following months.
The exact timing depends on factors such as:
- exposure to direct sunlight
- rain and wind
- the position of the sauna
- surrounding trees and vegetation
- how quickly the timber absorbs the first coat
After that, the exterior should be inspected regularly and restained when required.
As a general rule, the sauna should receive a maintenance coat at least once per year.
Regular staining helps maintain the colour and protects the timber from weathering, moisture and UV exposure.
Remmers Wood Stains Can Be Purchased in Ireland
The Remmers wood stains we use can also be purchased here in Ireland.
This makes it easier for customers to continue using the same product and colour when the sauna needs to be restained.
We can confirm which stain colour was originally used and advise the customer which Remmers product to purchase for future maintenance.
This is particularly useful for customers who want to maintain a consistent finish over the lifetime of the sauna.
Can I Choose a Different Sauna Colour?
Yes.
Although Nutwood is our standard colour, customers can select another available Remmers wood stain if they prefer a different appearance.
A lighter tone may work well in a bright or coastal garden, while darker colours such as Palisander or Ebony can create a more contemporary finish. Warmer reddish tones such as Chestnut or Mahogany may suit traditional timber buildings or existing garden structures.
The colour should ideally be selected before the staining work is scheduled.
Customers who would like a colour other than Nutwood should simply contact us in advance. We can discuss the available options and help select a finish that suits the sauna and its surroundings.
Protecting Your Outdoor Sauna
Outdoor timber will naturally change over time. Sunlight, moisture and temperature fluctuations all influence the surface and colour of the wood.
A suitable exterior wood stain helps slow this process while preserving the natural character of the timber.
By applying the first coat during installation and maintaining the exterior regularly, customers can help keep their outdoor sauna looking attractive and well protected for many years.
